A WEDDING, such a big event and therein lies a story… fortunately the majorities of the stories are more often funny and fun adding to the charm of the occasion.
The ring bearer dutifully presents the pillow with the wedding rings to the best man. In his efforts to untie the rings he makes a knot. The minister looks aghast at the situation. The best man says he’ll have to cut the rings loose. The minister’s question… how? At this point the best man takes out a Swiss Army Knife from the pocket of his tuxedo, cuts the rings away, and passes them to the minister. The ring rescue completed, the minister turns toward the bride and groom and states, “surely this is the best man!”
With a second marriage the bride and groom often want to include their own biological children as part of the ceremony to signify the union of this new family. One of the most joyful visions I’ve experienced is when the bride (Mom), the groom (Dad), three boys and three girls join hands and as a family run in the sand toward the ocean as the sun begins to set.
Where are the rings?
One couple left their rings at home 200 miles away. It’s amazing what can be created last minute with bent paper clips.
Please bring the rings forward. The 3yr. old ring bearer proceeds to toss the pillow into the third row of guests to be caught by Uncle Nick who was a retired wide receiver.
Children and their various roles in a wedding can add great charm, perhaps more so when the groom has to forage in the sand along with several other guests to retrieve the ring his son has dropped while playing with his cousin during the ceremony.
Having had experienced my 15 seconds of fame on America’s Funniest Video’s this is my favorite wedding story. Early evening the day before the ceremony a rehearsal was held for what would be a large formal wedding the next day. In attendance for the rehearsal were six groomsmen, a best man, a maid of honor, six bridesmaids, two flower girls and two ring bearers. Happily, to my surprise all goes well at the rehearsal.
The wedding day arrives and as far as I know, by way the compliments from the guest, again all has gone exceedingly well.
Two weeks after the wedding the bride calls me to say thanks for a job well done, but also to let me know something funny had been caught on video that I was not aware of having occurred. She was planning to submit the video to the TV program. I asked her to send me the disclaimer, I’d sign off on it, but I asked her not to tell me what happened. I wanted to wait to see it on TV.
As I watched our bridal segment on America’s Funniest Home Video’s the camera panned toward me, then the bride and groom, then down the groom’s man line toward the two ring bearers ages six and seven. A shoving match begins and they start to “duke it out.”
As this continues you hear my voice in the background saying, “love one another, but make not a burden of love; let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Sing and dance together and be joyous and let each of you embrace each others spirit.”
Even after all these years, people still call to say they’ve seen the segment on TV again.
